Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and having a wholesome nutritious one is highly difficult. With all the modernisation (western influence) humans usually tend to settle on easily available bread and jam (both filed with sugars and simple carbs). If you look into traditional south indian diet, you will notice how it is the best in the world! Except for all the ghee and butter and milk :P I don’t agree with kids and parents who think that chocos and other processed breakfast cereals as a healthy option. I have idly every morning. That is my secret :P Now I am gonna teach you too to get into this practise. One can make any side dish for idly. Idly goes well with everything.
How to make idly?
1/4 Cup Urad Dal (black lentils)
1 Cup Idly Rice or any Millets
2 teaspoon Fenugreek seeds (Vendhayam)
1 teaspoon Salt
Soak everything separately over night.
Grind individually in a wet grinder and make them into a fine smooth batter.
Mix them together with the salt and let it ferment overnight.
The batter will rise and double after the fermentation.
Now, make idly by pouring it into the cavities on an idly pan and steam for 10 mins.
What about the chutney?
Two very ripe tomatoes
A big garlic clove
A red onion
Curry leaves
Urad dal (black gram)
Mustard seeds
Dry red chilli
Salt
Dry roast the mustard, dal, curry leaves well.
Add in the chopped garlic and onion and sauté well.
Chopped tomatoes go in and cook well for few mins.
Grind the mixture in a blender to make smooth chutney.
Breakfast ready!
